Just a short distance from the sea in the shade of woods. This is a brief description of the qualities of the San Carlo area that perfectly combines all the peculiarities of the district. The route takes us through a group of woods with very rich vegetation along the bottom of the valley where we find springs of water on the ancient road that links San Vincenzo and Sassetta. We return along the northern ridge, again in a woody, but not so wild, environment.

Note:
Departure and arrival place: the village of San Carlo. We arrive by
taking the SS.1 Aurelia exiting at San Vincenzo north or San Vincenzo
south. Follow the signs from here. The village is also served by the
buses of the ATM company.
Leaving the village of San Carlo, in a northern direction, at the end
of the descent, we pass under the cable-car used to transport extracted
material from the Solvay quarry. On the right we see a dirt track that
descends among the low hills and two signs indicate the start of some
itineraries. After this short section, we arrive on an asphalted road
that we cross to descend again through the vegetation. We pass a little
bridge and walk on, on the flat, arriving and skirting the large quarry
we find on our right. Just a short distance later we arrive at a
junction: we follow the signs we find at this point. We continue with
no difficulty until we reach the next turn-off where we go in the
direction of route 3 and from here we go straight on. We are in the
Rozze valley, the old road linking San Vincenzo and Sassetta. We cross
a clearing in the wood and then ignore the turn-off that climbs towards
Sassetta. In the middle of the valley there is a torrent that runs
parallel to our route, and we follow this. We soon arrive at the old
reservoir that collects the waters of the three torrents that meet and
here we take the northern slope of the hill. We proceed, climbing
slightly, and arrive at the Loppole spring where we find signs inviting
us to climb near a ruined house. From here, we continue climbing until
we reach a large path, marked 00 on the map, that we take heading
towards the centre of the valley leading us to a large hairpin bend.
Here attention is needed because there are numerous turn-offs. We are
now near a crossroads where we leave route 3 and keep left until we
soon arrive at another crossroads and continue along the main path that
leads us to another path that we take on the left, heading east. Then
we go straight until we arrive at a clearing at the top of a hill.
This is mount Coronato which we cross until we almost arrive at the
top, on the north side. After walking around the mountain, we go
straight on until we reach a turn-off that takes us, in just a few
metres, to the peak of the Romitorio from which we have a wonderful
view: beneath us the great green expanses of oak trees, impenetrable to
the glance, cover the hillsides. On the south side, on the other hand,
we see the peak of mount Calvi and to the west our gaze is lost in the
Tyrrhenian sea. After our stop we return to the previous turn-off and
continue in the usual direction, passing quickly through an area
exposed to the sun and, keeping to the right, we take the path again
that arrives at a turn-off that we take, descending towards the Rozze
valley. We keep to this new path, passing a section over small stones
and we arrive at a much easier road that we take on the left. From here
we return to the path we took on our way up, so we follow the signs for
San Carlo and we soon arrive at our departure point.
The
itineraries presented for this district are part of a collection that
the magazine “Trekking” together with the APT (Provincial Tourist
Authority) of the Tuscan Coast, has dedicated to the most beautiful
trekking routes in this area. A series of itineraries that will help
you discover lovely places and will introduce you to a district that
has great environmental and cultural appeal.
